Dubai to Oman is one of the most travelled cross-border road journeys in the Gulf, and GH Trips runs it regularly to Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa, Salalah, Khasab, Sur and the Bahla–Jabreen area. Because this is an international crossing rather than a city transfer, the exact route, border crossing, and document requirements depend on your destination, your nationality, your vehicle, and current border conditions on the day — and we confirm all of that with you before departure rather than presenting one fixed script for every traveller.

Route Guide

Dubai to Oman Distance & Drive Time

Drive time and distance vary significantly depending on your Oman destination. These figures assume normal traffic and standard border processing; both can extend during UAE and Oman public holidays such as Eid or National Day.

DestinationApprox. DistanceApprox. Drive Time
Dubai → Muscat~380 km5–6 hours incl. border
Dubai → Sohar~200 km2.5–3 hours
Dubai → Nizwa~430 km6–7 hours
Dubai → Khasab (Musandam)~200 km3–3.5 hours
Dubai → Sur~500 km7–8 hours
Dubai → Salalah~1,100 km12+ hours, typically split with rest stops
Dubai → Bahla / Jabreen~440 km6–7 hours
On the border crossing shown above: the route and border crossing used are confirmed according to your destination, passenger entry eligibility, vehicle authorisation and current border conditions — not fixed in advance for every trip. See the border section below for how this actually works for each corridor.
Border Crossing

Dubai to Oman Border Crossing, Explained Correctly

Hatta / Al Wajajah — One Crossing, Two Names

For Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa, Sur, Salalah and Bahla, the standard land crossing is known as Hatta on the UAE side and Al Wajajah on the Omani side — these are two names for the same single checkpoint, not two separate alternative crossings. Wait times vary from around 15 minutes on a quiet day to well over an hour during peak holiday periods. Our drivers monitor current conditions and advise realistic timing before you depart.

Tibat Crossing — For Khasab and Musandam Only

The Musandam Peninsula, including Khasab, is reached by a genuinely different crossing: the route runs north from Dubai through Ras Al Khaimah to the Tibat border crossing, where you exit UAE immigration and enter directly into Omani Musandam territory in a single crossing. There is no requirement to cross into Oman and back into the UAE more than once on this route.

The honest summary: your exact route and crossing point are confirmed against your destination, your passport/visa eligibility, your vehicle's cross-border authorisation, and the border's current condition on your travel date — we finalise this with you before departure rather than promising one script for everyone.
Documentation

Who Is Responsible for What

Handled by GH Trips

  • Vehicle registration, Oman NOC and cross-border insurance for the assigned vehicle
  • Driver's cross-border operating permissions
  • Guidance at the border checkpoint itself

Your Responsibility as a Passenger

  • A valid passport, typically with at least 6 months' validity remaining
  • Your UAE residence visa or valid UAE entry stamp, as applicable
  • Your Oman entry visa or eVisa — immigration and customs compliance is the passenger's own responsibility, not something a driver or vehicle permit covers
On Oman visas: entry requirements vary by nationality and residency status — there is no single visa-on-arrival rule that applies to every traveller. Please check your eligibility on the official Royal Oman Police eVisa portal (evisa.rop.gov.om) before booking, and contact us if you'd like help understanding what applies to your passport.
Destinations

Oman Destinations We Cover

GH Trips serves the following Oman destinations regularly. Some remote or specialised areas beyond these may require a different vehicle, permits, or a local operator — ask us if your destination isn't listed here.

Capital · Business Hub

Dubai to Muscat

Oman's capital and primary business hub, roughly 380 km and 5–6 hours from Dubai including the border. Home to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the historic Mutrah Souq — a working market with over two centuries of trading history (not a UNESCO-listed site, despite what some sources claim).

Closest City · Industrial Port

Dubai to Sohar

The closest major Omani city to Dubai, around 2.5–3 hours away, and home to a major modern port. According to local tradition, Sohar is the birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor — a legend tied to the city's maritime history rather than a documented historical fact, since Sinbad himself is a fictional character from the "One Thousand and One Nights" tales.

Cultural Heart · Hajar Mountains

Dubai to Nizwa

Around 6–7 hours from Dubai, Nizwa was once the capital of the Imamate of Oman and is known for its circular fort and traditional souq. Bahla Fort, a genuine UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Jabreen Castle are both nearby and often added as extension stops.

Musandam Peninsula

Dubai to Khasab

Reached via Ras Al Khaimah and the Tibat border crossing in a single crossing, around 3–3.5 hours from Dubai. Khasab is the gateway to the Musandam fjords, known for their dramatic coastline and turquoise water.

Coastal · Dhow-Building

Dubai to Sur

Around 7–8 hours from Dubai, Sur is known for its traditional dhow-building yards and its proximity to the Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve. Best explored as part of a multi-day itinerary rather than a single long day.

Dhofar Region · Khareef Season

Dubai to Salalah

The longest route we run, at roughly 1,100 km. During the Khareef season (June–September), Salalah turns unusually green from monsoon-driven mist and rain. See the long-route planning note below before booking this as a single day.

UNESCO Heritage

Dubai to Bahla & Jabreen

Bahla Fort is a genuine UNESCO World Heritage Site, and nearby Jabreen Castle is one of Oman's best-preserved 17th-century castles. Both sit close to Nizwa and are usually booked as an extension of that route.

Long-Distance Planning

Salalah, Sur and Other Long Routes: Planned Honestly

At over 1,100 km, Dubai to Salalah is a genuinely long drive — 12 hours or more of actual driving time before fuel, meal and rest stops are added, which can extend the total day considerably. We do not treat this as a guaranteed fixed duration. Instead, we plan around driver working hours and rest requirements, and offer an overnight stop or a second-driver arrangement on request for this route and other long legs such as Dubai to Sur.

A Muscat same-day return specifically: a Muscat same-day return requires a very long travel day and may not be suitable for every passenger or driver schedule. If you're considering this, talk to us about your itinerary before booking so we can advise honestly on whether it fits.
Pricing

Dubai to Muscat Pricing (Displayed Options)

The pricing below applies specifically to the Dubai–Muscat route. It does not apply to Sohar, Nizwa, Khasab, Sur, Salalah or multi-city tour pricing — those routes are quoted separately based on distance, vehicle and duration.

VehicleRouteOne-Way PriceInclusions
Lexus ES300 HybridDubai–MuscatAED 700Confirm details at booking
Group SUVDubai–MuscatFrom AED 850Confirm model at booking
Cadillac EscaladeDubai–MuscatAED 1,200Confirm details at booking

Driver, fuel and standard border tolls are included in the fare for the assigned vehicle. Oman visa fees and personal entry charges remain the passenger's responsibility. A fixed quote is confirmed with you before travel — prices shown are a starting reference, not a guarantee for every date, pickup address or drop-off point.

Safety

Driving from Dubai to Oman

UAE and Oman road infrastructure on the main cross-border corridors is generally well-maintained and signposted. That said, no operator can eliminate the ordinary risks of long-distance road travel — fatigue, weather, traffic and border conditions all play a role, and border admission and processing are controlled by the relevant authorities, not by us. What we can do is reduce avoidable risk: our drivers are route-experienced, trained in defensive driving, and we plan rest breaks and, for longer routes, overnight stops or a second driver rather than pushing through in one stretch.

In-Country Add-On

Private Driver in Oman During Your Stay

Many clients keep their GH Trips vehicle and driver for the duration of their Oman stay rather than arranging separate local transport for each day. This is arranged as a transportation service — your chauffeur provides driving and general local familiarity with routes and timings, but this is not a substitute for a licensed tour guide, and we do not present it as guided-tour narration unless a specifically qualified guide is arranged separately.

Multi-day, in-country chauffeur service inside Oman is arranged in line with the applicable Omani operating permissions for the vehicle and driver assigned to your booking — this is confirmed at the time of booking rather than assumed automatically for every UAE-registered vehicle.

Booking

How to Book

  • Share your pickup location, Oman destination, date and passenger count via WhatsApp, phone or our booking form.
  • We confirm your vehicle, route, applicable border crossing and a fixed quote based on your specific trip.
  • Once confirmed, your driver details and vehicle information are sent to you ahead of travel.
  • On the day, your chauffeur meets you at the agreed pickup point and handles the vehicle-side border process.
  • If you're flying in, your chauffeur meets you at the designated arrivals meeting point after immigration, baggage collection and customs — not inside the arrivals gate itself.
On availability and confirmation: our support team is reachable via WhatsApp and phone outside standard hours, and responds as soon as possible; confirmed departure times are arranged in advance to suit early or late travel. Booking requests are confirmed by our team once your specific route and vehicle are checked — please ask us directly about current deposit requirements, as these are set out in our booking terms rather than a blanket no-deposit policy.
Travelling the Other Way?

Oman to Dubai

This page is written for the Dubai-to-Oman direction. If you're starting in Oman and travelling to Dubai instead, we run that leg too — contact us with your Oman pickup point and we'll confirm the return route, crossing and fare separately, rather than assuming it mirrors this page exactly.

Request Your Dubai to Oman Quote

Share your destination, travel date and passenger count, and we'll confirm your route, vehicle, border crossing and a fixed price before you travel.

Dubai to Oman Border Crossing: Everything You Need to Know

The UAE–Oman border is one of the most regularly crossed international land borders in the world — but for first-time travellers, it can feel intimidating. Our drivers cross this border multiple times every week, and they will guide you through the entire process smoothly and efficiently.

The Two Main Border Crossings

There are two primary border crossing points used for Dubai to Oman by road travel, each suited to different destinations and starting locations within Dubai.

Al Wajajah Border Crossing (Via Abu Dhabi Highway) — Most Common

The Al Wajajah crossing is the main entry point into Oman for travellers coming from Dubai via the Abu Dhabi side. This crossing is used for most destinations — Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa, Sur, Salalah, and Bahla. The road condition is excellent throughout, and the crossing facility is modern and well-managed. Wait times vary from 15 minutes on a quiet day to 90 minutes during peak holidays. Our drivers always monitor real-time conditions and advise on optimal departure times.

Hatta Border Crossing — Faster from Central Dubai

The Hatta border is a popular option for travellers starting their journey from central or eastern Dubai who want to avoid the Abu Dhabi highway. However, the Hatta route passes through a small Omani enclave before re-entering the UAE, which means all passengers must have valid Oman entry permissions even for transit. For destinations like Muscat (via the Batinah Coast road) or Sohar, Hatta can save up to 45 minutes of driving. Our drivers will recommend the best option based on your pickup location and travel date.

Documents You Need at the Oman Border

  • Valid passport with minimum 6 months validity remaining
  • UAE Residence Visa (for UAE residents) or valid UAE tourist stamp
  • Oman eVisa obtained in advance via evisa.rop.gov.om (recommended for most nationalities)
  • Oman visa-on-arrival (available for GCC nationals and select nationalities — confirm before travel)
  • Vehicle permits and insurance — fully handled by GH Trips, no action needed from you

Our drivers carry all vehicle documentation and are experienced at facilitating smooth crossings for passengers of all nationalities. If you have any questions about your specific visa requirements, we are happy to advise — though we always recommend confirming the latest rules with the Omani embassy or official Oman eVisa portal before your trip.

Rent a Car With Driver From Dubai to Musandam

Is It Safe to Drive from Dubai to Oman?

Absolutely. The Dubai to Oman by road journey is one of the most well-maintained and safest highway routes in the region. UAE and Oman road infrastructure is modern, well-signposted, and heavily patrolled. The biggest risks for self-drive travellers are fatigue on long stretches and unfamiliarity with the route changes around the border zone. With a professional GH Trips driver at the wheel, neither concern applies to you. Our drivers are rested, route-experienced, and trained in defensive driving standards.

Luxury Chauffeur Services in Dubai

Every Oman Destination We Cover — In Detail

GH Trips does not just cover the obvious routes. We serve every significant destination in Oman with the same level of luxury and professionalism. Here is your complete destination guide.

Dubai to Muscat Car Rental — The Capital Journey

Muscat is Oman’s crown jewel — a city of white marble, grand mosques, and a stunning coastline that stretches along the Gulf of Oman. It is also Oman’s primary business hub, home to international corporations, luxury hotels, and a growing conference and events calendar.

The Dubai to Muscat car rental is our most booked route, and for good reason. At approximately 380 kilometres and 5 to 6 hours including the border crossing, it is the perfect length for a comfortable road trip in one of our luxury vehicles. Depart Dubai in the morning and arrive in Muscat by early afternoon — fresh, rested, and ready. Our Dubai to Muscat by car service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Business travellers love our early morning and late-night departures that sync perfectly with flight schedules and meeting timetables.

Dubai to Sohar Car Rental — The Quickest Oman Trip

Sohar holds the distinction of being both the closest major Omani city to Dubai and one of the fastest-growing industrial and commercial centres in the Gulf. As the birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor, Sohar carries centuries of maritime heritage alongside its modern port complex, which handles billions of dirhams in trade annually.

The Dubai to Sohar car rental journey takes just 2.5 to 3 hours, making it our most popular option for same-day business visits and day trips from Dubai to Oman. You depart from Dubai, cross the border at Al Wajajah, and arrive in Sohar before most colleagues have finished their morning meetings. Our Dubai to Sohar taxi service is particularly popular with executives from the industrial and logistics sectors who need reliable, punctual transport for back-to-back meetings.

Dubai to Nizwa Car Rental — Into the Heart of Oman

Nizwa is the cultural soul of Oman. Located at the foot of the Hajar Mountains, this ancient city was once the capital of the Imamate of Oman and remains one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country. The Nizwa Fort — a massive circular tower that has guarded the city for centuries — is one of Oman’s most photographed landmarks, alongside the famous Nizwa Souq where copper handicrafts, silver jewellery, and traditional Omani khanjar daggers are traded.

Our Dubai to Nizwa car rental takes approximately 6 to 7 hours and is one of the most scenic road trips we offer. As you pass through the Hajar Mountain range on the approach to Nizwa, the landscape transforms dramatically — from flat desert to dramatic rocky peaks and green wadis. Many of our clients book a multi-day Nizwa package that also includes day trips to the nearby Jabreen Castle, the Bahla Fort (UNESCO World Heritage), and the dramatic Al Hoota Cave.

Dubai to Salalah Car Rental — The Great Oman Road Trip

If there is one journey that every road trip lover should make at least once, it is Dubai to Salalah. At over 1,100 kilometres, this is the longest and most epic route in our portfolio — and it is absolutely worth every kilometre. Salalah, capital of Oman’s Dhofar region, is like no other city in the Gulf. During the Khareef season (June to September), the region receives the tail end of the Indian Ocean monsoon and transforms into a lush, misty green paradise completely unlike the surrounding desert.

Our Dubai to Salalah car rental is a full-day journey with comfortable rest stops at key points along the way. We typically stop at Qalhat (for the ancient archaeological site), Ras al Hadd (near the turtle nesting beaches of Ras al Jinz), and the scenic Dhofar highlands approach. Families, adventure travellers, and photography enthusiasts absolutely love this route. We also offer a two-driver option for this route on request, ensuring maximum comfort and safety throughout.

Dubai to Khasab Car Rental — The Musandam Fjords

Khasab is the capital of the Musandam Peninsula — a stunning Omani exclave that juts into the Strait of Hormuz, completely surrounded by UAE territory. Getting there requires crossing the UAE border, passing through a small stretch of Oman, and crossing back into the Musandam region. The reward for this slightly complicated crossing is extraordinary: dramatic fjords, crystal-clear turquoise water, and a sense of remoteness that is genuinely rare in the modern Gulf.

Our Dubai to Khasab car rental journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, making it an ideal day trip or overnight getaway from Dubai. The route passes through Ras Al Khaimah and the Tibat border crossing. Our drivers are fully permitted for Musandam travel and know the winding coastal roads intimately.

Dubai to Sur Car Rental — Turtles, Dhows & Desert

Sur is Oman’s easternmost coastal city and one of the most historically significant — a proud dhow-building tradition continues here to this day, and the nearby Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve is one of the world’s most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites. The Dubai to Sur journey takes approximately 7 to 8 hours by road.

Sur is best explored as part of a multi-day Oman tour. Many of our clients combine a Sur visit with stops at the Wahiba Sands (one of Oman’s most spectacular desert landscapes), the ancient oasis town of Adam, and the dramatic coastal scenery of the Sharqiyah region. Our multi-city Oman car rental packages are ideal for this type of extended exploration.

Dubai to Bahla & Jabreen Car Rental — UNESCO Heritage

Bahla Fort is one of Oman’s four UNESCO World Heritage Sites — a massive fortified complex that dominates the Bahla oasis and dates back to the pre-Islamic period. The nearby Jabreen Castle, built in the 17th century, is one of Oman’s finest examples of traditional castle architecture. Both are near Nizwa and can easily be incorporated into a Dubai to Nizwa car rental package as extension stops.

Oman Airport Transfer — We Cover Both Sides

GH Trips is not just a Dubai-side service. We also provide professional Oman airport transfer services for travellers arriving in Muscat International Airport (MCT) who need onward transport to hotels, business districts, or other Omani cities.

If you are flying into Muscat from Dubai and then need to travel to Nizwa, Sohar, or Salalah, or if you need a taxi from the Oman border to Muscat after crossing by road, our drivers can meet you at the airport arrivals gate or the border crossing with a name board and handle all your onward transport. This is a particularly valued service for business travellers who mix air and road travel across their Oman itinerary.

We also handle the reverse journey — Oman to Dubai by car. Many Omani residents and visitors use GH Trips for their Dubai to Oman return trips, knowing they will receive the same standard of service and the same professional driver experience on both legs.

Chauffeur Service in Al Dubai

Need a Private Driver in Oman During Your Stay?

One of the most requested add-ons to our car rental Dubai to Oman service is a dedicated private driver in Oman for the duration of the stay. Rather than relying on Oman taxi services, local cab apps, or expensive hotel transfers once you arrive, many of our clients prefer to have a GH Trips driver available exclusively for them throughout their time in Oman.

An Oman private driver from GH Trips gives you the same luxury vehicle and professional service you enjoyed on the journey from Dubai — but now available for all your in-country movements. Need a driver from your Muscat hotel to a business meeting in the morning, a lunch run to the Mutrah Souq in the afternoon, and a private tour to the Grand Mosque at sunset? Your dedicated Oman chauffeur handles it all.

This service is especially popular with executives on multi-day business trips to Muscat, families on extended Oman holidays, and corporate groups attending conferences or site visits. Our Oman chauffeur service pricing is available on request — we build a custom package based on your specific itinerary, vehicle preference, and number of days.

Frequently Asked Questions — Car Rental Dubai to Oman

The Dubai to Oman distance by road depends on your destination. Dubai to Muscat is approximately 380 km (5–6 hours). Dubai to Sohar is around 200 km (2.5–3 hours). Dubai to Nizwa is approximately 430 km (6–7 hours). Dubai to Salalah is over 1,100 km (12–14 hours). Dubai to Khasab is around 180 km (2.5–3 hours).

Technically yes, but only if the rental company explicitly permits cross-border travel to Oman in writing and provides valid Oman insurance and border permits. Most standard Dubai car rental companies do not allow this. If caught at the border without proper permissions, your insurance is void and the vehicle may be impounded. A GH Trips chauffeur-driven car rental Dubai to Oman eliminates this risk entirely.

A private GH Trips car rental Dubai to Oman starts from AED 700 for the Dubai to Muscat route in a Lexus ES300. Luxury SUVs and premium sedans range from AED 850 to AED 1,200 for the same route. For groups of 4–7 passengers, this is often cheaper per person than multiple individual taxi fares, and the comfort level is incomparably higher.

Dubai to Muscat takes 5 to 6 hours including the border crossing. Dubai to Sohar is 2.5 to 3 hours. Dubai to Nizwa is 6 to 7 hours. Dubai to Salalah is a full day — 12 to 14 hours with rest stops. Times may vary based on border conditions and traffic.

Yes — a day trip from Dubai to Oman is very achievable, especially to Sohar (2.5–3 hours), which is the closest major Omani city. Many business travellers do same-day Sohar and Muscat trips. Our day trip car rental Dubai to Oman packages include a dedicated driver for the full day with no hourly restrictions.

Most nationalities require an Oman visa to enter the Sultanate. GCC nationals enjoy simplified entry. Residents of many nationalities can obtain an Oman eVisa via evisa.rop.gov.om before travel. Some nationalities qualify for visa-on-arrival. We recommend checking the latest requirements for your passport before booking.

Absolutely. Our Oman private driver service gives you a dedicated GH Trips chauffeur for the duration of your stay in Oman — from cross-border pickup in Dubai all the way through your final Oman drop-off. This is our most comprehensive and popular option for multi-day business trips and family holidays.

Our Oman-ready fleet includes the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (7 seats), GMC Yukon Denali (7 seats), Cadillac Escalade (7 seats), BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and Lexus ES300 Hybrid. All vehicles are 2023–2024 models, fully air-conditioned, and prepared for long-distance cross-border travel.
